With daily tours departing from Wakefield Street in the city centre, we invite you to sit back and enjoy stunning harbour views, insider stories of film and creativity and even spot the iconic Wellywood sign on the way to our creative home in Miramar.
Wētā Workshop has been making cool stuff for film and TV since 1987. Our crew has brought to life beloved characters and epic special effects for iconic blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Avatar.
Step into Wētā Workshop Experiences and explore a world of creativity, physical effects and movie magic on a guided tour through our creative home base.
You'll learn about the making of props, creatures and costumes created for your favourite films. Get hands-on with unique pieces from our many departments, catch our artists at work and discover how we’ve grown into the award-winning workshop you see today.

This tour takes place in a functioning workshop, so it can get a little drafty. We recommend bringing an extra warm layer or two.
There is no luggage storage in the transfer vehicle, Wētā Cave or at in tour space.
Photography is strictly prohibited in all tour spaces, unless specified by the tour guide.

For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.
What To Expect
Your guided transfers depart from the drop-off and pick-up zone at 217 Wakefield Street (located by Tākina) We recommend arriving at the pick-up point 15-min before your booked departure time.

5.00This was an excellent tour with a lot to see and learn. Our guide was well informed, enthusiastic, and clearly enjoyed sharing the work that goes into Weta’s creations. The pickup and drop-off were smooth, and the driver provided useful background on the area and the studio’s history. The foil sculpting demo was a fun, hands-on highlight. Be Aware Most areas of the tour do not allow photography or video. If taking pictures is essential to your enjoyment, this may not be the best fit. Side Note I traveled halfway around the world only to be taught foil sculpting by someone I happened to know from Seattle. Not relevant to the tour itself, but a fun coincidence.

5.00What a fascinating experience! Our guide Becky was exceptional. She was extremely knowledgeable and engaging. She was very inclusive and made it interesting for all the various age groups. There were experiential opportunities which Becky made assessable and fun. She created several photo opportunities which we all took advantage of. I can not recommend this experience enough!

5.00The pickup for the tour was really easy, and was worth it instead of calling our own taxi or figuring out the bus system. The tour itself was fantastic! It was fun to see all the aspects of creation that go on behind the scenes for our favorite movies. We loved how the tour ended with a mini craft to give everyone a sense of how easy it can be to start your own craft and prop making. Very different than other large studio tours I’ve been on that make it seem fancy and hard to do yourself. The gift shop was surprisingly uninteresting, but the tour itself was great!

5.00The tour guide (Becky) was super cool, very knowledgeable and quite passionate about the type of work thst you do. Same can be said about our driver, who took time to answer every question and was awesome. The experience was amazing and one that I would do again.
