A professional English speaking tour guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the
killing fields of Choeung Ek Genocide Center – 9 miles away south of Phnom Penh. The infamous killing fields have a bloody history. Once an orchard and a
Chinese cemetery, the Khmer Rouge, lead by Pol Pot, turned the place into
what became known as the killing fields, where they executed around 20.000 victim. Over three years they massacred and
buried 2.5 million people. After remembering the dead, return to Phnom Penh to visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21). Meaning hill of the poisonous trees, Pol Pot turned a once popular
high school into a high security prison. 20,000 people were imprisoned
there, many of whom were tortured for information. Today it serves as a
museum and a reminder of darker days.

We felt that this trip was necessary after spending the previous week in Vietnam. This way you get to not only hear but see both sides. The killing fields is a trip that everyone should go on. This is history. The museum S21 is a must however we had a guide, Sumit. He was super knowledgeable. I think I would have preferred the headphones as you can then take your time. This is not to be rushed. There are survivors throughout the tour the families along with the survivor selling their book, we bought one at the killing fields, however there were 3 further survivors at S21. I hope this helps make your mind up. Oh and always wear long sleeve top and long trousers, it’s respectful, and if you don’t they don’t let you in.

Whilst the subject matter of the trip was obviously important cultural history of Cambodia with a sombre feel we enjoyed the trip Our tour guide Sum Cheath was well informed and presented information well and organised the morning well by imparting important information verbally but also by allowing adequate time at certain points of the day to use the visual impact of photography and information boards to gather information yourself The trip was well organised and a good way to visit the killing field and prison museum with no hassle We were collected from and dropped back to our hotel and all in all it represented good value and would recommend
