Officially named Ho Chi Minh City in 1976 to celebrate the reunification of Vietnam, many in the country's largest city still call it Saigon, especially when talking about the city center. Cruise to Vietnam to get to know the immense, bustling metropolis that is HCMC, as its commonly abbreviated, by visiting Cholon (Chinatown) in District 5 — wander its narrow streets and picturesque pagodas, and step foot in the incense-filled Thien Hau Temple. Then, fill up on spicy beef noodles at Ben Thanh market. See the massive dragon carpet inside Independence Palace, the former home of South Vietnam's president before reunification, or learn more about what the Vietnamese call the American War at the War Remnants Museum.

Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon
Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral, built in the late 1880s by French colonists, is one of the few remaining strongholds of Catholicism in the largely Buddhist Vietnam. Located in Paris Square, the name Notre Dame was given after the installation of the statue ‘Peaceful Notre Dame’ in 1959. In 1962, the Vatican conferred the Cathedral status as a basilica and gave it the official name of Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. Measuring almost 60 metres in height, the cathedral’s distinctive neo-Romanesque features include the all-red brick façade (which were imported from Marseille), stained glass windows, two bell towers containing six bronze bells that still ring to this day, and a peaceful garden setting in the middle of downtown Ho Chi Minh City District 1.

Liam went above and beyond to ensure the private tour was the perfect pace for us. We had people ranging from 7 to 70 and each person was catered for. He made sure we ate, saw, and experienced what we wanted. We felt safe, he was reliable, and super duper accommodating! Thanks Liam for all the little treats for us and the kids and Mr T our driver, for making sure there was minimal walking for the older people.

We had booked a car with driver at our disposal for a day, we could visit the places that most interested us in Ho Chi Min City at the same price as the excursion organized by the ship .all very easy and comfortable with a guide in addition to the driver

My wife and I want to thank Mr Kelvin of Maximus Travel Vietnam for an exceptional private shore tour from the Phu My cruise terminal. The tour included a separate professional driver (Mr A), all entrance tickets, bottled water, and lunch at a local restaurant. We travelled in a luxury Toyota Cruiser, which Mr A drove extremely safely and smoothly throughout the day, allowing us to relax and fully enjoy the experience. Kelvin himself was outstanding. He is a young, personable, and engaging guide who speaks fluent English and holds a degree in Travel and Tourism. His knowledge of Vietnam’s history was impressive and clearly explained, as he brought to life the development of Ho Chi Minh City and the country as a whole from around 1760 through to the present day. Kelvin lives in the Chinatown district where his family has been settled for five generations, therefore he has great local insight. One of the highlights of the day was visiting a local food market. He also treated us to Vietnamese coffee and chocolate, and kindly bartered on our behalf at the local markets, which was both fun and much appreciated. Out of a 14-day cruise on the Diamond Princess sailing from Singapore, this was without question the best shore excursion we experienced . Maximus Travel Vietnam should be very proud to have him as a guide. With grateful thanks, Paddy Man

A tailor-made visit to a city that really requires the presence of a guide to feel the energy of the place. Also to be recommended for those arriving by cruise ship (the guide and driver wait at the entrance to the port, and are attentive to the time of return - depending on the often heavy traffic congestion). An efficient and dynamic guide (Ms. Nhuy), with a command of English that is more than enough to share her knowledge of this beautiful country. Recommended!
