Ashigaru Museum
The tour starts with a visit to the Ashigaru Museum. Ashigaru is a word describing low ranking Samurai, and here you can enter two homes that once belonged to Ashigaru families in the days of the Samurai. Outside, you will find beautiful landscaping, and inside faithfully preserved rooms granting a glimpse into old-school Japanese life.
Ruins of Nagamachi Bukeyashiki
Next, you will be led through the former Samurai District known as Nagamachi. Here, the streets still maintain their handsome appearance and the visitor would be forgiven for thinking they have somehow landed in Old Japan. With a number of shops selling local crafts on the street, you will also have a chance to window shop for some goodies to take home.

This is a walking tour and you do walk a lot! However, the experience you gain and the the sites you see by walking is amazing. Mike was an excellent guide with a wonderful sense of humour. Mike was well informed with the history of Japan and you could see he clearly enjoyed showing others the beautiful city of Kanazawa. Be prepared to take your shoes on and off as well - wear slip on slip shoes. Kenrokuen Garden was just beautiful and the Gyokusen-an tea house was a very special experience. Highly recommend this tour and ask for Mike!

I only had a one-day stopover in the beautiful city of Kanazawa, so I booked this full-day walking tour, and it turned out to be the best decision. By chance, I was the only guest that day (low season), and I had Atari as my guide, making the experience feel pretty personal. Atari was a fantastic companion to explore the city with: knowledgeable, thoughtful, and engaging. Despite some truly horrendous weather (wind/rain in winter) at times, she was an absolute trooper. Atari answered everything, we spoke throughout the day from historical context to everyday life in Japan, which really brought the city to life. All of the listed highlights lived up to expectations: glimpses into samurai and geisha houses, peaceful matcha break, Kenrouken to lunch recommendations. The itinerary is full but never too rushed, and every stop feels worthwhile. Highly recommended if you want to make the most of limited time in Kanazawa. Thank you Atari!

Asari was an outstanding guide and made my day in Kanazawa truly special. We walked through Kanazawa Castle and the garden, and she brought each place to life with clear, fascinating historical context. She’s incredibly fluent in the history—explaining not just what we were seeing, but why it matters—while also pointing out details I would have completely missed on my own. She was warm, professional, and easy to talk to, and she adjusted the pace and focus naturally based on my interests. I learned a lot while still enjoying a relaxed walk. I highly recommend Asari, and I’d recommend this guiding service to anyone visiting Kanazawa who wants a deeper, more meaningful experience.

Farida was the ideal guide to Kanazawa, she was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and knew just how to pace what was a full day of walking and information. If you want to see the major historical sights of this city in one day, while being fed a steady stream of insider knowledge - this is ideal.

We had a great tour with Akari. She was professional and knowledgeable; her insight into the history of Kanazawa, including how it developed as an attractive alternative to Kyoto, was clear and engaging. Her explanations added depth to each stop and helped us appreciate the cultural significance behind what we were seeing. In fact, with only two participants, the tour felt very personalized and never rushed. Akari guided us through the neighborhoods of the samurai, serene gardens, and geisha districts at a comfortable pace, making the day both informative and enjoyable.
