Doubtful Sound is wonderful. We enjoyed it equally with our visit to Milford Sound a few years ago. Highly recommend visiting both. Milford Sound is accessible by car and Doubtful Sound is only accessible by bus and a lake boat. The transit is worth the extra transit time, for its sheer beauty and remote location. A favorite experience is the pause of silence near the end is the excursion We highly recommend both Milford and Doubtful Sound

Very well organized. NZ is a top quality operator. I think I like Milford Sound better but this was a fun experience.

Long day, but it's worth doing! Just give yourself time before/after because you'll be taking a 2 hour bus to a 1 hour ferry to another 1 hour bus to a roughly 2.5 hour cruise, then coming back the same way you came. It's a long day! But the cruise is done so well that it's worth the effort. Great logistics getting you from point to point. It's a little rough on the 2nd bus because it's a convergence of multiple groups all going to the same place so it's a bit hectic. But once you're on the boat for the cruise, you'll get to relax and enjoy. Get a bit of food and drink, then start seeing some great sights on the cruise. Beware though - bring sunscreen and insect repellent (if you didn't know of sand flies, you will after this trip) so you can protect yourself. Consider ordering lunch ahead for more premium choices, but the ferries have decent food you can buy once there.

While the cruise was interesting and beautiful, most of the day was spent in a bus getting there and back from Queenstown. It was very, very crowded and loud which made the peaceful experience, I had read about Doubtful Sound non-existent, except for approximately three minutes when they turned the large boat’s engine off.

An unforgettable, immersive experience with RealNZ – Doubtful Sound is extraordinary We chose Doubtful Sound over Milford Sound. I can’t compare the two, but I can say without hesitation that we absolutely loved Doubtful Sound. From start to finish, the entire journey felt deeply immersive. Doubtful Sound is unlike any place we’ve ever seen—magnificent, mysterious, and profoundly quiet. It feels remote and untouched in a way that’s increasingly rare. Importantly, getting there is a big part of the experience itself. The layered journey by boat and bus builds anticipation and makes the arrival feel earned, not rushed. The guides were outstanding—extremely knowledgeable, genuinely enthusiastic, and clearly passionate about the place. Every member of the team was polished, professional, and warm without being scripted. The boats and facilities were clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed, with plenty of spots to take in the views from different angles. Food, coffee, and wine on both boats were surprisingly good and added to the overall comfort of the day. Yes, you are technically traveling with a full bus of people—but somehow the experience still felt peaceful, calm, and intimate as we absorbed the surroundings. The highlight for me was the five minutes of total silence in one arm of the sound—the “Sound of Silence.” Standing there in complete stillness, surrounded by nature, was genuinely moving and something I’ll remember for a long time. Highly recommended. Doubtful Sound delivers something rare: beauty, depth, and quiet all at once.

Just as advertised,,,a very full day that was well managed and kept on schedule with so many changes in transportation. I might emphasize there won't be any stops in the first two hours and the food options quite limited. It's mentioned but bringing a sandwich and snacks would be your best bet. Not anyone fault but just such a long day, lots of prep helps. It was a great experience!

This is a very long but very well organised day; kicked off at 7.30am with one of two bus rides and two boat trips and we landed back at base at 8pm. However (and despite the rain in the sound) the waterfalls were amazing and all the commentary very informative. Throughout the day there are drinks and sandwiches/snacks available. All of the RealNZ staff were helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating- could not recommend this company enough.

Total length of trip is about 13 hours with more than half in a coach. However, one experiences the majesty of the South Island scenery - lakes, mountains, waterfalls, dense bush and culminates with an unforgettable cruise along one of Fiordland's beautiful fjords. Trip was very well organized with great guides, drivers and other staff. Special for me as I caught sight of New Zealand's most elusive penguin - the Fiordland Crested. Quite suitable for people with limited mobility.
