This was the highlight of our trip to Dunedin. What a spectacular place to explore. Our kids enjoyed climbing to the top of the castle and even took a liking to learn about the history behind this spectacular castle. You really get a feel for what it would have been back then. We unfortunately didn’t get to experience the cafe there as we were limited to time with our travel plans and therefore I can’t speak for the food, but we walked through the cafe and the setting was amazing. The gardens are well maintained and we loved the variety of plants and sculptures. Would highly recommend a day trip here.

I visited Larnach Castle in May 1966. It was a derelict shell. I was keen to see what had been accomplished by the new owners who took possession in November 1966, It was a delight to see the result of 60 year's work. The magnificent building has been restored. It is full of period furniture and beautiful gardens have been established. We had lunch in the restaurant, choosing from the menu, instead of the high tea (which looked delicious); watched the video showing steps is restoration; spent time reading the history of the family and wandered through the gardens. My guest from Europe was enthralled by the garden - the colour and variety of plants and the views of the harbour. It was excellent value for money and I totally recommend making the visit. I noted that there is a restaurant for an evening meal for people who are staying in their accommodation, and this is a must for when I am in Dunedin again.

You DEFINITELY need to go on the Tour. Our guide, John, was EXCELLENT. He's a great story teller and I was so enthralled, I bought the book about the family history (from the gift shop). It's well written and entertaining. I'm enjoying it very much.

Lovely self guided tour inside Lanarch Castle and walking around the surrounding gardens. Very beautiful and peaceful. Very detailed information provided about the history of the castle. Great way to spend the weekend. We spent about 2 hours there.

Spent four hours wandering the garden tracks, inside the castle, including lunch at the cafe. Was a very enjoyable visit. Was informed by a local about a film set at the castle and other local venues called The Royal Treatment on Netflix. The movie was fun only because we could work out the locations!!

  • Great, better than 4.4 stars, well worth being in the #1 spot.

Wish we had more time. We visited Larnoch Castle and gardens on our own with Uber from the cruise ship. We beat all the big tours which was great. The Castle and gardens are worth more than 4.4, I would say 4.8 and the staff makes it a solid 5. David the doorman was so friendly and on New Year's day, when most are sleepy and groggy from the night party. We only had 1.5 hrs to tour before we had to disembark the cruise and head inland. It wasn't enough and we wish we had another hour to properly give the gardens a thorough walk. Well done and I hope the renovations are able to continue!
