Tangkoko National Park in North Sulawesi is an interesting tourist destination to visit. It is home to various animals, including 47 protected endemic animals. Tangkoko National Park is located in Bitung City, about an hour's drive from Manado City, the capital of North Sulawesi.
One of the endemic animals in Tangkoko National Park that must be seen is the tarsier. Tarsier or what local people call tangkasi is the smallest mammal in the world and is endemic to North Sulawesi.
Tarsier, whose Latin name is Tarcius spectrum, is a small monkey the size of a mouse with a long tail. Tarsiers are nocturnal animals and are no bigger than a human fist. His eyes are big round and shine when a flashlight shines on them.

Know before you go: 1) Wear appropriate wet/dry clothing & shoes for hiking a rainforest that's wet and muddy, best to wear close toed shoes--I wore sport sandals but ants got me. 2) Bring bug spray and water for 2.5-hr walk thru humid rainforest, driver had bottled water. 3) From Bitung, once out of the city at least 2/3 of the 1-hr drive there the narrow road is very curvy! Rained the whole way there and back but not at all during our hike. Park guide was very good, after 30 minutes came across a large group of macaca monkeys, got great videos. Rest of hike spotted cuscus (like Koala) high in tree, the little tarsier in hollow of a tree, and kingfisher bird--all viewed/photoed with guide's binoculars on tripod. Also saw the beach, you hear crashing waves throughout hike. At start of trip it was a challenge to find correct driver, we were early and he wasn't holding the sign yet, but once we connected then waited in a nice Mercedes 15-passenger van for others (total of 8 from same cruise ship). He spoke little English. We left the port at 9am and he said not a word the whole drive there/back. Left reserve after 1pm, got to restaurant for lunch 2pm, they had fried or grilled chicken wing, rice, curry sauce, pickled veggies, bottled water. Then drove thru main part of city (interesting sights) back to cruise terminal. Advance info via Whats App was very good, though again a challenge to find the right driver among so many others. Still it was very worthwhile to see the wildlife, like a Tarzan experience.

This was such a fun experience. The guide was great at spotting animals and we were always the first group to find them. Also very helpful with getting us the best pictures.

Overall a god tour. Excellent communication beforehand, with clear explanations on how to meet the tour van. Yet, quite disorganized in some aspects (forgot about the water, kept reorganizing the groups, etc.) Nonetheless, the tour stops were worth it and the lunch was excellent.

I was expecting to see a number of different animals and birds. Saw a group of monkeys, one bird and the eyes of a tarier. Guide was poor and not very informative. Named only one tree. Very disorganized. I thought was going to be a small group, but there were 18 people. Extremely disappointed.

Long winding drive in small a with tight seating Extremely hot and humid walk. Difficult for less mobile guests. On positive side guides were great. Saw lots of wildlife including black macaque monkeys.

Do a little research on the Tangkoko park before you take this excursion so you understand what you will be seeing. The species you will see are truly unique. The guide did an excellent job finding the group of black Macaque’s, Bear Couscous (a rare sighting) and a Tarsier. The driver was excellent, especially in the thunderstorm on the way back to the port. The lunch was clean and delicious. A very nice excursion from our cruise ship. I highly recommend.
