What To Expect
Abbott Square Market
This half-block served as Santa Cruz's city and county center, with the Cooper House originally built as the courthouse in 1866. In the 1970s-80s it transformed into a legendary gathering spot for music, dining, and dancing. Demolished after the 1989 earthquake, the site is now home to Abbott Square.
See the Compass Rose building, one of the oldest surviving structures downtown, and the iconicTown Clock built in 1976.

5.00Matt is engaging and informative, but he doesn’t pontificate or try to dominate his walks, which is what makes them great. He is gracious and allows conversation to flow naturally with the stops, letting people relax and take in the scenery without forcefully corralling them around or sticking strictly to an itinerary, like other tours I have experienced. You can tell how knowledgeable Matt is by how little he double-checks his notes while speaking: he has it memorized, confidently, like a tried-and-true local would. His tours are relaxed, entertaining, enlightening, and highly recommended for anyone seeking a bigger, more flavorful slice of Santa Cruz history.

5.00What an informative and interesting perspective of Santa Cruz! Matt was very personable and it was a lovely walk from the Boardwalk to downtown. As a local, I thought I knew the history of the area, but turns out there is more to learn! Fun tour!
