What To Expect
Kagoshima city, located at the southern tip of Japan, is home to the active volcano Sakurajima, which continues to be lively to this day. About 4 km away lies a city with a population of around 600,000 people. This is a globally rare region where an active volcano and a city coexist. The area within 2 km from the crater is normally off-limits, but on this tour, you'll safely approach the crater with a guide who has special permission, climbing up the Nojiri River using disaster prevention techniques. This unique experience allows you to witness the wild and fierce form of Sakurajima up close, feel the liveliness of the volcano and the Earth, and learn about the coexistence of nature and humans near a volcano that erupts on a regular basis. Participants must be able to ride a bicycle. (Activity Level) Distance: About 8 Km one-way (16 Km round trip) / Elevation difference between start and destination: 360m *Physical ability to hill climb by E-bike on a volcano is required.

5.00Rento is a fabulous guide providing education about volcanoes and how islands have adapted to risks. Great to be outside on bikes - seeing Sakurajima volcano, lava fields, and local pottery made from ash.

5.00My son and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The e-bikes were quite new and performed well. We were guided by Rento who provided excellent commentary in English. We went up several restricted area roads, eventually getting to a nice lookout point. We got to see some of the "behind the scenes" workings of the protections in place for people living on an active volcano. We thought the tour would be crowded, but it was just the three of us. I highly recommend this (non-strenuous) adventure.

5.00Rento was an excellent guide and gave lots of interesting information about Sakurajima. The e-bike made the climb enjoyable and using the service access roads allowed you to get a great close up view of the volcano. Highly recommend.

5.00The trip exceeded our expectations! We went by electric bike, which was very comfortable and not tiring. Very exciting to be allowed into the prohibited zone, it allowed for some thrilling views! The guide, Rento, was super welcoming and he had good answers to all our questions. After the tour we had Japanese green tea and a little snack in the sun. 10/10!
