Katsurahama Beach
Katsurahama is one of Kochi’s most famous scenic spots, known for its sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and its strong waves that make swimming unsafe but create a dramatic coastline. It is also home to the iconic statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, a legendary samurai and reformer of the late Edo period, making it a popular place to enjoy both natural beauty and history.
Ryoma Sakamoto Bronze Statue
Standing proudly at Katsurahama Beach, this bronze statue honors Sakamoto Ryoma, a visionary samurai and key figure in Japan’s Meiji Restoration. Facing the Pacific Ocean, the statue symbolizes his forward-looking spirit and remains one of Kochi’s most iconic landmarks, attracting many visitors who come to pay tribute and take photos.

Our driver didn’t speak a word of English and we couldn’t get access to the internet to activate the translator app. The tour itself was good. I would never book a tour without an English-speaking driver again. Also, I found the company, SmartRyde, not very responsive to queries.

We had a terrific tour of Kochi. Managed to fit in all the sights with a minimum of full. Must say the communication with Viator and the tour operator was excellent. Pick up, drop off and everything in between was seamless.

We had an excellent tour of kochi. We started at Katsurahama Beach which was close to the port where our cruise ship was located. We then toured Kochi Castle which was beautiful but there are lots of steps so it is not recommended if you have mobility issues. We followed with a trip to Hirome Market which is a very large food court with a large selection of Japanese food. Overall it was a busy be very nice day.

The list of attractions listed for tours was a great choice - Katsurahama Beach, Kochi Castle, Hirome Market, Godaisan Observatory & Chikirinji Temple. One has to be judicious where one allocates one’s visiting hours as it is easy to spend too much exploring every part of a stop to the detriment of the others. Thus, fortunately we limited ourselves at the first stop at the Beach (not walking to the Ryuo Point, not visiting the museum). If one wishes to climb up to the top of the Castle Kochi, one needs to allocate time given the lines for the steep (& not so wide steps). The driver was excellent , safe and professional. He even rushed out to children/families on the beach who were unaware that rogue waves have taken lives of those who were too close to the sea. He helped with group pictures too, and accompanied us at certain stops to guide us on the route. He was early waiting for us in the dock’s waiting area for taxis.

It is not a tour, It’s just like renting a taxi. You never made clear that nobody was one to come to guide us and we never received the promised documentation relating the activity of the tour. We only received a whatssap the day prior to the tour and they never replied when we tried to contact them. The taxi driver managed as-well as he could considering that, practically, he didn’t speak any English

The excursion was excellent. It would be a five if we had an English speaking tour guide, but the tour guide was excellent and went out of his way to accommodate all our wishes.

Very helpful and courteous guide who let us tailor make our journey as we went along. Had a lovely time at the Botanical Gardens and then a temple and onto Kochi Castle.

Unfortunately trip was cancelled due to ship unable to dock in wild weather 😕 Not their fault at all, I’m sure would have been good.
