Nikko Tosho-gu
Understand why “Don’t say ‘magnificent’ until you’ve seen Nikko” visiting the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate and nearby shrines and temple. The most renowned shrine of “the Shrines and Temples of Nikko”-a Japan’s leading world heritage, is where Ieyasu Tokugawa, the great Shogun who started the flourishing Edo Period, is enshrined. Most of the shrine complex you see today was rebuilt in 17th century. The shrine contains 55 buildings including 8 national treasures and 34 listed buildings. The highlights are sumptuous carvings lacquered and richly coloured brilliantly, which you will gaze at craftsmanship assembled from all over the country. Do not miss the symbol of peace “Sleeping Cat”, and the “Three Monkeys” with the “see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil” poses!
Kegon Falls
Kegon Waterfall is the most famous of Nikko’s 48 waterfalls. Water from Lake Chuzenji falls 97 metres straight down to the rocks below creating a dynamic and artistic work of nature. A special lift takes visitors to the basin where the force and roar of the water can be witnessed close up! Impressive in any season, the waterfall looks particularly spectacular when surrounded by the fresh green leaves in May, house martins in June, or the “12 falls” - small streams of the frozen waterfall clad in blue ice - during January and February.

Taka was a fantastic guide to the Nikko area. He catered much of the tour around my interests in architecture and construction. It was amazing to have a guide take that effort. He also left me with some good recommendations for food and souvenirs after the tour when I had some time before I needed to catch my train. The tour was fantastic the sites, both built and natural, in the Nikko area are amazing.

Koba was my guide for a day trip to Nikko. He was very kind and knowledgeable about the history and culture of Nikko. I had a wonderful experience as he guided me around Kegon falls, Chuzenji lake, Toshogu shrine, Kanmangafuchi Abyss, and Rinnoji temple. He was even kind enough to let me practice my Japanese with him. He was amazing and is highly recommended!

We had an amazing day trip to Nikko with our guide, Yuki! She was incredibly sweet, knowledgeable, and made the entire experience feel effortless and fun. Yuki shared so much history and insight about each site we visited, which made everything even more meaningful. Nikko itself is stunning, and exploring it surrounded by nature made the day feel truly special. From beautiful shrines to peaceful forest paths, every stop was memorable. Thanks to Yuki’s thoughtful guidance and warm personality, the whole trip felt personal and relaxed.

Our guide, Takafumi was very well prepared, enthusiastic and energetic. He contacted us ahead of time to get a sense our interests and confirm our meeting time and location. When we met he gave us maps which he had annotated and he gave an overview of our itinerary and the historic importance of the site. We had a delightful lunch with him and spent the day learning about and enjoying Nikko. Thank you!

My daughter and I had a wonderful tour of Nikko with Yuki! She did an amazing job of sharing ideas for where to go ahead of the tour, including helping to book a taxi with a car seat for my 15 month old daughter, so we knew ahead of time exactly where we would be going! Travelling with a small baby can be tough and a little bit slower at times, but Yuki was flexible on timing and really helped a lot to ensure that my daughter also had an amazing time on the tour! I would highly recommend it.

Lovely experience. Our guide was so sweet and helpful. Nikko itself was absolutely beautiful. It was snowing there, which made it even more incredible. If you have an extra day, I would highly recommend doing this, as it also provides a great contrast with the hectic city.
