Museum of Transport

Head inside the Swiss Museum of Transport with your entrance ticket and explore at leisure. The museum charts the development of rail, air, space, road and water travel with hands-on exhibits, simulators and multimedia displays. Your ticket gives you access to its key exhibition halls and areas, filled with more than 3,000 displays, making for a fun day out for adults and kids. Visit the Aviation Hall to view historic aircraft and flying machines. The museum takes its exhibits to new heights with flight simulators that give you the rush of operating an airplane, helicopter, or hang glider. When it's time to get grounded, walk around the Rail Transport Hall to see steam locomotives and model railways, and try your hand at negotiating tunnels, signals and bridges in train simulators. Zoom over to the Road Transport Hall for the history of automobiles and to view 20 of the world’s most iconic cars. You can even turn into a crash-test dummy to experience a bruise-free collision in one interactive exhibit. Other attractions include the Navigation Hall with its fascinating seagoing displays; the i-factory covering information technology; and the Swissarena where you can walk across a one-of-a-kind aerial photo of Switzerland that takes up an entire room. Most people find two–three hours in the museum is sufficient, but your ticket lets you explore for as long as you like. For a supplement you can also visit the museum’s domed planetarium to witness its dazzling astronomical shows, and its Filmtheater to watch spectacular 3D and high-definition movies.

  • Most visited museum in Switzerland and it's deserved!

Located 10 minutes by bus from Lucerne train station, this museum is the most visited in Switzerland. Plan the day. There are many very interesting animations but ask about the schedules. Very nice imax cinema but you have to pay extra. Very interesting museum hans erni included in the admission price. Very good cafeteria. Only downside: it's expensive.

"We had a great day at the Transportation Museum with my little one. There were really nice things to see, and even for a young child it was both interesting and fun. We recommend without hesitation!"

It is a place for families to visit and experience the history of mobility. We were able to see the past, present, and future of rail, road, space, and water transport from multiple exhibits.

  • An essential destination when visiting Lucerne

This was a very impressive museum. It was spacious and well laid out, with something to interest everyone. We liked watching the children enjoying the hands on activities especially the quarry and dumper trucks outside! Our main interest was the railway exhibits and there was plenty to see in this area. We appreciated the descriptions in English and everything was easy to understand throughout the whole museum. Plenty of time is needed to fully explore all the different exhibits throughout the various transport sections. The museum increased our admiration of Swiss transport technology. It is recommended for any transport enthusiast and is also very child friendly.

  • Big, fun museum

This museum is expansive and features the aviation history of Switzerland. There’s also a large exhibit of engines, a feature on helicopter rescues (including from aerial trams!), and even a next-door art museum with transportation-related pictures. One of our favorite parts was the video exhibit of cliff-diving and surfing — don’t skip this part! There are a few features for kids, including a place where you can stand and experience the simulation of helicopter “wind”. The museum is a short way outside the city, but two buses stop there, so it’s easy to get to and from. If you walk the first part of the way there, you get to see several gardens as well as a playground. You can pick up the bus whenever you’re ready.

  • A very nice discovery!!!

I went back to this museum because the last time I was a teenager and this place is still great and didactic. It is suitable for all ages, especially for children because they can look closely, touch and try certain things. The venue is accessible for people with reduced mobility and takes place both outdoors and indoors. I highly recommend it.

Was disappointing. I guess it's more for kids. Hadn't been there in decades. No real attractions as they are expected today.

  • Modern, well-thought out museum

An excellent museum with historical, modern, and experimental models of cars, trains, boats, and planes. This was very informative and would be great for kids, lots of interactive features. We had lunch at the Brasserie, it was delicious and reasonable.

  • Interactive museum for (older) children, quite the challenge for parents

    hberings,,Jul 21, 2025

    - Review from Tripadvisor

We went here on a rainy Monday in July, thinking this would keep our whole family entertained in a meaningful and educational way. While the museum definitely has quite a lot to offer to (mostly older) children, it also proved to be the place-to-be for parents who liked their eardrums pierced and their patience tested. The popularity of this place is also is greatest challenge: the crowds lead to long queues for the most appealing attractions (like flight simulators) and there is a constant soundscape of screaming toddlers and older children disappointed at not getting a second turn at something they enjoyed. Most of the fun activities are aimed at children aged 10-14, but kids aged 6 pay the same ticket price but are denied access to most of these activities. The biggest letdown for us was the price: €35 per adult is an outrageously high admission fee for something which has little to offer to adults. On top of that, the restaurant is overpriced and they charge extra for certain attractions (like the ridiculous 2 CHF you’ve got to pay for your toddler to ride aboard a little train). Overall this makes the museum feel too much like a tourist trap, although it definitely has potential and could prove a fun activity in the off-season. We might come back in a few years when the kids are older (and with our own picnic).
