What To Expect
Learn the basic surfing techniques you need to be able to stand up on your board. The coaches will teach you a tecnique that makes getting up very easy! If you're a quick learner, you can take it to the next level and try out some steering techniques on your board. • 3.5 Hour Group Surf Lesson • Expert surf coaches • Guaranteed to stand up or come again free • All surfing equipment, including wetsuits (rash vests or sping suits in summer, steamers in winter) • Sunscreen • Return transport to the beach • Small groups - low instructor to student ratio (1:7) • Light refreshments • Professional photography for an additional charge • 15% OFF Rip Curl voucher What You Need To Bring • Swimmers • Towel • And a Smile High safety standards and small groups The surf lessons are of the highest quality. Your safety and fun are the number one priority. There is always 1 instructor to every 7 students, so every participant gets plenty of help and attention. You will be provided with the personal attention you need to stand up and start surfing the waves in no time. Blackdog Surf School is an ASI approved surf school. The school meets and exceeds stringent safety and quality standards. All the coaches are qualified lifeguards with many years of coaching experience. They all hold a Level 1 Surfing Coach Accreditation, Bronze Medallion and Senior 1st Aid Certificates. We have been operating surf lessons on the beautiful beaches of Byron Bay since 2001. Their aim is to give you the amazing feeling of riding your very first wave. Our coaches check surfing conditions of the beaches before every lesson. They will bring you to the beach with the best conditions for your particular level. One of Byron Bay's popular surf beaches is The Pass. Its waves are perfect for beginners. Tallow Beach is another splendid surfing beach. It is famous for its idyllic scenery and dolphin sightings.

5.00What a great time surfing! My 16 and 13 year old sons went surfing in a group lesson, and had a great time! Tour included a van ride from shop to the beach, Board and rash guard, trip back to shop and popcorn. Lots of instruction happened on the beach before getting into the water. Once in the water the surfing started right away. Everyone in the group got up and had success very quickly. Instructor was great! Very encouraging and always available with a positive comment about the run. Would highly recommend using BlackDog Surf School!

5.00Simply the best Surf School in Byron. We started coming to Byron in 2006 with four very young children and looked around for instructors to teach them how to surf. We were so fortunate to meet Dean and Tam who run Black Dog Surfing. Our children visit Byron often and have gained so much knowledge from the Black Dog Surf team over the years. No matter how busy the schedule is Dean always finds time to squeeze in lessons for us and our friends with either him or his amazing instructors. We will continue to keep visiting Byron and keep asking Black Dog to take care of our friends and family learning to surf here. Thanks for the decades of amazing surf instruction and great friendships too. Keep up the great work.

5.00Would highly recommend! I had never surfed before, and wanted to give it a try in Byron Bay. The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They did a great job explaining the fundamentals and helped me practice the basic movements. Once I was in the water, I quickly gained confidence. I was standing up in no time! I’ll definitely be surfing again in the future. Thanks for a great lesson!

1.00I had my first surf lesson with the Black Dog company a few years ago now, in Bryon Bay. However, I’m still struggling with the repercussions of that lesson and the damage it caused. During the lesson I landed on a sandbank and rolled my ankle. I was in agony and I had to crawl out of the water on my own. When someone eventually came to me I was told it was “too swollen” to be broken, and I was left lying on the beach in my wetsuit until they finished their lessons then made to try and walk back to the van. I was then dropped at my hostel in my wetsuit and left alone with no incident report or follow up. I had to get the wetsuit off myself and take myself to the hospital where I was told it was fractured in 2 places and I’d have to have metal plates and pins fitted. It ruined my trip to Australia and I still struggle now with my ankle. There was no follow up, no incident report and not even an offer of a refund for my lesson.

5.00Simply amazing! Not just the surf lesson itself, but everything and everyone was so friendly. They remember all names, and after we even got some popcorn. It really felt like coming home again, would almost say it felt like family! Had such a blast and would definitely recommend this surfing school.
