See the city of Christchurch from above by taking a trip aboard the Christchurch Gondola. The cable car takes you on a scenic journey to the Port Hills crater rim and Mt Cavendish summit, giving you fabulous views of Christchurch's dramatically changed cityscape. See Canterbury Plains and Lyttelton Harbour unfold as you rise to the summit complex, on the crater rim of Christchurch's famous extinct volcano.
Please note the Christchurch Gondola is a 15 minute drive from the city centre and a ten minute drive from the port of Lyttelton.
To see even more of Christchurch, go Punting on the Avon River. If the combo package is purchased. Please book your Punting timeslot prior to arrival by contacting the supplier directly.

What To Expect
Christchurch Gondola
Take in views over the city of Christchurch, damaged but recovering from the 2011 earthquake, and see all the way to the snowcapped Southern Alps and Canterbury Plains. As you rise more than half a mile (almost a kilometer) to the crater summit, the suburbs of Christchurch recede below you and panoramic views take in Lyttelton Harbour. From up here it’s easy to see how the harbor was formed by a collapsed volcanic crater. At the summit, ride the Discovery ride to see a video of Christchurch, its history, people and volatile geology. Enjoy a snack or meal at the Red Rock Cafe (not included), and browse the Shop at the Top retail experience. Add a Punt ride on the Avon River and glide along in a flat bottomed boat. Relax as a Punter, traditionally dressed in straw hat and blazer, propels you past a romantic setting of boat sheds, trees and riverside paths. See the wildlife float by, and be prepared for all weather with blankets and umbrellas provided.

4.00Gondola ride was not as spectacular as we had hoped, however gift shop at the top had very good prices and we were able to do a lot of souvenir purchases. The punt boat ride was beautiful and relaxing. We had asked for an earlier time since our cruise departed early. We were told we could not do earlier even as we were checking in for punt ride however they sold tickets to others. We had to uber back to ship instead of using our bus passes. Apparently they don’t like accommodating those who have already purchased .
Combo of gondola and punting is good.

5.00We did the combination Avon River punting, and the gondola to the top of that mountain. Both experiences are very good our river punting captain, Jack, was very friendly, informative, and comical. On the gondola you get to have a nice panoramic view of the whole area. I recommend.

5.00The kids really loved it. Although the weather wasn’t perfectly clear, we were still able to see most of Christchurch. In particular, the complimentary Level 1 attractions included in the ticket were very engaging for the children, which made the experience even more worthwhile. Seeing the sheep up close outdoors was also a great highlight. However, since the gondola is located quite far from the city center, you need to allow more time than expected for the visit.

5.00Great ride up to the top, wonderful views of Christchurch and Lyttletton. The cafe was nice and clean and had a good range of food at reasonable prices. Many walking tracks lead from the top if you are feeling energetic.

5.00Try to go on a clear day so you can see the mountain range. This is a must see. Besides the beautiful vantage points, you get to see sheep grazing the mountainsides. The port of Littleton and several bodies of water. If you go on a Saturday, it’s a quick bus ride to Littleton where they have live music, farmers market, and great artisan booths.

3.00Apart from the 360 views the gondola experience was unremarkable. The staff in the cafeteria were cheerful however the overall look and feel of the eatery could do with a refresh. The obligatory souvenir shop was the same as most others. Overall it was good but not great.
